The club have already been linked with a sensational move for Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal.
MirrorFootball understands that United representatives met with the Netherlands coach earlier this month to discuss a potential switch.
Moyes is now expected to go imminently - but how does he compare to Van Gaal? May battle commence...
International standing
Not much of a contest, this one. While Moyes has long been regarded as one of the bright young things of the British game, he is still something of an unknown quantity outside of these shores. United's decision to plump for him over Jose Mourinho last summer provoked puzzlement in some quarters – not least in the mind of the Portuguese himself, who was apparently flabbergasted.
Van Gaal, by contrast, has managed Ajax, Bayern Munich, Barcelona (twice) and the Netherlands (twice). That CV speaks for itself, really.
Tactics
Moyes is regarded as a slightly defensive, reactionary manager, happy to absorb pressure and hit back with direct attacks. But this reputation, in truth, smacks of revisionism: his Everton side often played neat, passing football, with technical players like Steven Pienaar, Leighton Baines and Leon Osman thriving under his tutelage.
The issue for United fans is that Moyes appears to be falling between two or three distinct stools: Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj are tippy-tappy passers; in Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney he has two talismen who demand to be the centre of attention; Marouane Fellaini is a (failing) gameplan unto himself. The three just don't seem to be compatible at present.

Van Gaal is more certain of his convictions. "I am who I am," he once declared; "confident, arrogant, dominant, honest, hard-working and innovative." He is committed to a collective, attacking game in the great Dutch tradition – an approach that allowed him to thrive at the Camp Nou. It isn't immediately obvious how the United squad would adapt to him preferred 4-3-3 formation, but he wouldn't lose any sleep worrying that his way isn't the right one.
European experience
Moyes can be happy with his first European campaign with United: a quarter-final place is par for the course, while there is no shame in losing to Bayern. His best effort at Everton, meanwhile, came in 2007/08, when the Toffees reached the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.
Van Gaal has far more experience on the continent: he has managed in almost 150 official UEFA games during the course of his 23 years in management. His most successful spell was undoubtedly with Ajax, whom he guided to the UEFA Cup, Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. That record is the envy of most in Europe.

A point for Moyes here. The Scot has been learning his trade in British football's top flight for over a decade, meaning he has a feel for the movers and shakers that Van Gaal is likely to lack. He still signed Fellaini, mind.

Longevity
While not exactly a nomad, Van Gaal hasn't tended to stick around at one club for too long. His six years at Ajax remain a career best, and he has yet to remain at one team for more than 200 games since.
Moyes, on the other hand, proved at Preston (234 games) and Everton (over 11 years) that he can stick around for the long haul.
Languages
Van Gaal is something of a linguist, speaking German and Spanish to a good level. His English isn't too shoddy either, meaning he'll be able to get his point across to Wayne Rooney and co, as well as to old pal Robin van Persie.
Moyes can speak English. He's also learning to smile, which should broaden his communicative reach still further.

Potential for growth
Although still going strong at 62, it is entirely possible that Van Gaal's best managerial years are behind him. Indeed, for all his achievements, he has never quite managed to hit the heights of his first spell in Amsterdam. One wonders whether his appointment would be something of a short-term solution for United, requiring them to find another manager within two or three years.
Moyes has struggled early in his United career, but was selected by Sir Alex Ferguson not just for his current ability but for his potential. It now appears United are no longer prepared to wait for that to come to fruition.
