Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of bolstering his United squad before the transfer deadline appear to be fading fast.
The Reds' manager has openly been chasing a new striker throughout the summer, with the British media convinced that Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov is his number one target.
With four days to go until the deadline passes, however, Sir Alex is not hopeful - although he insists that his side can cope regardless.
"At the last press conference I said I wasnt optimistic," he told his pre-Super Cup press briefing in Monaco. "Im less optimistic today, so well carry on.
"Ive no idea whats going on really, its very hard to get communication with some people in life. We just have to get on with it."
This season's transfer window will close at midnight on Monday, September 1 by virtue of August 31 falling on a Sunday
