PAUL Scholes cannot afford for United to take as long to get back to a Champions League final if he is to savour the Moscow moment again.
The Reds midfielder missed the 1999 triumph in the Nou Camp against Bayern Munich
due to suspension when he picked up a second yellow card in the semi-final against Juventus.
He was only 25 at the time of the Barcelona final
and had age on his side to get over the disappointment.
However, he was 33 before United forced their way back to the final and beat Chelsea last May
while Paulo Maldini was 38 when he won his last European Cup medal with AC Milan last year in Athens against Liverpool.
The Champions League draw takes place in Monaco tonight, which culminates with the final in Rome next May.
Scholes doesn't envisage he can do `a Maldini'.
So it is now or never again for the next couple of campaigns.
"The players are determined
it won't be another nine years before we win it again," Paul told M.E.N. Sport.
"If it is another nine years I will be 42
and I don't think that is going to happen do you!"
"I know Maldini did it when he was coming up to 40
but I am telling you there is no chance that will be me.
It has to be in the next couple of years if I am going to win it again."
"After missing out on 1999 I never comforted myself by believing we'd win it again soon after and I'd be involved," the Reds midfielder added.
"I know how tough it is to get back there. There are 15-20 very good teams capable of winning the European Cup.
"I just said to myself if it happens it happens. I just thought carry on playing and then one day we might be good enough to do it again. Thankfully we did. It would have been a little disappointment to have gone through my career and not appeared in a Champions League final.
"But it wouldn't have been a massive downer. I'd have got over it. I have been lucky enough to win a lot of trophies so if I hadn't got a Champions League winners medal I would have just said `so be it'.
"I enjoyed it in Moscow though. We won the trophy everybody wants to win. It was a great night."
Milan, Ajax and Juventus reached the final again as holders 12 months later but all failed to gain back-to-back success.
Now United will give it a crack and Scholes hopes the Reds can kick on in Europe better than the Treble winners did.
"I have no idea why we didn't push on from 1999 and win a few more," he said.
"We don't want it to be nine years before we win it again. We want it again soon. We won it last year with a young team and they will be a year further on and definitely better. It will be something to look forward to.
"My hunger and desire has never diminished. You win something and it is great for a day or two and then it is over. It has to be that way," he said. "You enjoy it on the night and celebrate and then a day or two after it is about the next trophy and the next season.
"You can't dwell on it because nobody else will. It doesn't matter what you have won if you have a nightmare in the next match or the next season people will let you know about it. There is no time to think about what you have won."

"นักเตะทุกคนมีความมุ่งมั่น
ผมไม่คิดหรอกว่า จะต้องรออีกถึง 9 ปี เหมือนเมื่อครั้งที่แล้ว
ถ้าต้องรออีก 9 ปีจริงๆ ผมจะมีอายุอานาม 42
ผมไม่คิดหรอกนะว่าเรื่องแบบนั้นมันจะเกิดกับผม ใช่ไหมล่ะ"
"ผมรู้ดีว่า มัลดินี่ คว้าแชมป์ใบนี้มาครองได้ ในวัยเกือบๆ 40
แต่ผมบอกคุณได้เลยว่า มันไม่มีทางที่ผมจะทำได้แบบนั้น

ผมไม่เคยปลอบใจตัวเองซักครั้ง ว่าเราจะชนะได้อีก โดยที่ผมจะมีส่วนร่วม" มิดฟิลด์คนเก่งกล่าว
"ผมรู้ว่ามันหินขนาดไหนที่จะกลับไปตรงนั้นให้ได้
มี 15-20 ทีมที่ดีมากพอที่จะเป็นผู้ชนะรายการนี้"
"ผมได้แต่บอกตัวเองว่า มันเกิดขึ้น มันต้องเกิดขึ้น
แค่เราพยายามเล่นให้ดีที่สุดต่อไป และวันนึง เราจะดีพอที่จะไปยืนตรงนั้นอีกครั้ง
เป็นเรื่องที่น่าปลาบปลื้มมาก ที่เราทำได้จริงๆ
มันคงเป็นเรื่องน่าผิดหวังไม่น้อย

มิลาน ไอแอกซ์ และ ยูเวนตุส เคยกลับไปถึงรอบชิงได้อีกครั้งในฐานะแชมป์เก่า
แต่ไม่เคยมีทีมใด สามารถรักษาถ้วยใบนี้ได้แบบต่อเนื่อง
ครั้งนี้ แมนฯยูฯจะพิสูจน์ตัวเองอีกครั้ง
โดยที่ สโคลส์ หวังว่าจะทำได้ดีกว่าเมื่อตอนมาป้องกันในฐานะทริปเปิลแชมป์
"ผมไม่รู้เลยจริงๆนะ ว่าทำไมเราไม่สามารถรักษาฟอร์มต่อเนื่องจากปีนั้นมาได้
เผื่อจะชนะรางวัลอะไรต่อมิอะไรเพิ่มเติมอีกหน่อย"
"เราไม่ต้องการจะรออีก 9 ปี เราต้องการจะชนะครั้งต่อไปเร็วๆนี้แหละ
ปีที่แล้วเราสามารถชนะได้ด้วยทีมที่มีวัยรุ่นมากมาย
นั่นแปลว่า ยังมีเวลาให้พวกเขาพัฒนาให้ดียิ่งๆขึ้นไปอีกด้วย มันเป็นอะไรที่น่าติดตามจริงๆ"
"ความกระหาย และความต้องการในชัยชนะของผมไม่เคยหมดลงง่ายๆ
การได้ชนะรางวัลอะไร ทำให้ผมดีใจไปวันหรือสองวัน แต่ก็แค่นั้น และผมว่ามันน่าจะเป็นแบบนี้
คุณเฉลิมฉลองในคืนที่คุณคว้าแชมป์ได้ แต่หลังจากนั้นไม่กี่วัน
